summer singing school

From Broadway to opera house

Why is it that some singers feel so much freer as performers when singing Music Theatre songs? What is it about the genre that allows us to forget our stage fears? Can we possibly transfer these skills to classical repertoire performance?

As Workshop Leader and Facilitator, Morag McLaren draws from her professional experience in Opera, West End, Comedy, Physical Theatre, Cabaret and Improvisation to explore the options. She moots the idea that contrasting vocal presentation styles can feed each other rather than conflict. The course will look at ways we can be stylistically flexible, so that we can approach and perform Operatic and Music Theatre repertoire with equal confidence, pleasure, clarity of emotional intention, and vocal authenticity.

Each participant will be asked to bring two items – one music theatre number and one opera aria. The weekend will include individual sessions as well as group exercises and games in the workshop.

There will be an informal presentation and Q&A at the end of the weekend for a small audience.
